Chris Blackwell Launches Blackwell Rum x Charbonnel et Walker Truffles

November 22nd, 2021

Two Celebrated Names Collaborate & Create The Perfect Pairing Of Rich Dark Chocolate And Smooth Island Flavor

On November 21, 2021, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and hotelier Chris Blackwell will launch his latest collaboration, Blackwell Rum Truffles, which decadently combines his smooth Jamaican Gold Blackwell Rum with the chocolate of Britain’s first and finest chocolatiers, Charbonnel et Walker.  Each delectable truffle has a velvety golden rum-filled center wrapped in their legendary rich and silky dark chocolate and topped with vermicelli chocolate sprinkles. Available to order on BlackwellRum.com and CharbonnelChocolates.com, each package of 9 truffles is $28.00.

Blackwell Rum Truffles are elegantly presented in the chocolatier’s signature style – a luxurious handmade gold box.  Tucked under the box lid is an exclusive playlist, accessible via a QR code, curated by music industry pioneer and Island Records founder Chris Blackwell himself.  A transportive experience filled with the spirit of Jamaica awaits while savoring Blackwell Rum Dark Chocolate Truffles paired to this selection of relaxing island sounds.

The Black Gold Blackwell Rum used in these dark chocolate truffles has a traditional dark rum character with a light butter-gold body, soft notes of vanilla, caramel and toasted marshmallow, and a natural spice finish. The rum is encased in dark couverture chocolate composed of 70% cocoa solids, with its rich flavor complementing the warm, spiced palette of the spirit.

The partnership was inspired by the island of Jamaica where both Blackwell and Charbonnel et Walker Chairman Galvin Weston have strong roots and a family heritage.

Influential entrepreneur and record producer Chris Blackwell hails from one of the longest producing rum families on Jamaica. He founded Island Records in 1959, introducing the world to Millie, Bob Marley, Grace Jones, U2, Robert Palmer and Cat Stevens. Before there was music, there was rum. Returning to his roots, Chris created an exceptional dark Jamaican rum based on an original family recipe. It’s his special way of celebrating Jamaica’s unique and limitless energy.

With a royal warrant and celebrated patronage, Charbonnel et Walker, established in 1875, are known for fine chocolates and truffles. Mme Charbonnel, trained with the decadent and experiential chocolate houses of Paris, brought her exquisite and flamboyant techniques to London and to Mrs. Walker. Together, they opened their first store on Bond Street, offering the finest chocolates and sweet delicacies, all presented in beautiful gift boxes mostly hand made by Mrs. Walker. Exclusively a dark chocolate house only until the late 1970’s, the dark chocolate of Charbonnel et Walker is known for its rich, deep flavor with fine, silky couverture. Today, Charbonnel et Walker chocolates are still hand-made to the traditional recipes of Madame Charbonnel and sold from their shop on Bond Street and other London locations, as well as online.

andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge | Tanzania | June 6, 2022

Conservation-led luxury travel company andBeyond has announced that andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp in Tanzania’s Western Corridor will reemerge from an extensive rebuild, following a flood in April 2020, with a brand-new identity as andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge. As part of andBeyond’s ethos, sustainability will be key in the rebuild. With interiors by long-time andBeyond collaborator Fox Browne Creative, the rebuild will use the existing footprint of the former structure to redefine the classical tented camp look in a form that will least impact the natural landscape. Guest suites will double in size and feature deep baths and indoor showers, as well as extensive outdoor decks with private plunge pools. The rebuild will also bring a new family suite. An extended selection of experiences is also being developed in time for the reopening. These will combine with the rich resident wildlife of this remote corner of the Serengeti, as well as the lodge’s ideal location for experiencing the thrilling river crossing and vast herds of the Great Migration.

VIRTUOSO® BRINGS LUXURY TRAVEL’S TOP EXECUTIVES TO VIENNA FOR NETWORKING AND IDEATION SESSIONS AT ITS 2021 SYMPOSIUM

November 10th, 2021

VIENNA (November 8, 2021) – Virtuoso®, the global network renowned for creating meaningful experiences in luxury travel, brought to Vienna key stakeholders from its travel agency members and preferred partners for the group’s 2021 Symposium, an event originally scheduled for March of 2020 in recognition of what would have been the 20th anniversary of the company’s rebranding to “Virtuoso.”  The high-level event attracted 329 of the industry’s most prestigious executives from 33 countries for networking, trendspotting, and meaningful dialogue around the challenges, opportunities, and future of luxury travel.

The event’s Opening Session struck just the right note as attendees gathered in Vienna’s beautiful Musikverein – Golden Hall, where in addition to multiple presentations on industry insights and trends, guests were also treated to performances from the Vienna Boys’ Choir as well as an improvisational piano piece from 16-year-old composer prodigy Alma Deutscher paying tribute to the spirit of Virtuoso. Presenters included Courtney Scharf, chief client officer of Trend Hunter, and Tiffany Misrahi, vice president of policy and research for the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), both of whom sat down with Virtuoso Senior Vice President, Marketing Helen McCabe-Young for a conversation on trends and opportunities to impact the future of travel and tourism.

Virtuoso Senior Vice President, Network Products and Strategy David Kolner also presented insights that assessed the current state of the travel business. Showing the rebound continues, Kolner shared that for the third quarter of 2021, the network’s U.S. sales are 66 percent of what they were in 2019, and leisure hotel bookings have surpassed the same time period in 2019 at 103 percent. Longer stays also continue to trend. Comparing October-November-December of 2019 vs. 2021, lengths of stay increased respectively to 115 percent, 132 percent and 143 percent longer. January 2022 stays vs. 2020 are a whopping 163 percent longer, indicating we will continue to see this consumer behavior. City hotels are also on the rise, with bookings up 497 percent since January and 44 percent since June.

Virtuoso Chairman and CEO, Matthew D. Upchurch, delivered the keynote address during the event, sharing with the audience how Vienna factors into Virtuoso’s history as the location he selected 21 years ago to reveal the rebrand of the company from API Travel Consultants to Virtuoso, a move that has helped elevate not only the network he serves but also the entire travel advisor profession. Noting that the last 18 months have brought unprecedented challenges, he spoke of Virtuoso’s commitment to scaling up strategically to become a truly global organization by strengthening the value to the network’s members and partners, and growing its share of target travelers during this historic opportunity to do so.

“Thinking globally pushes us to build flexible solutions that help us capture even greater market opportunities everywhere,” said Upchurch. “Never before have we had such a strong demand for travel, combined with a deeper appreciation for the value of a professional travel advisor.”

Upchurch also explained a concept he termed “adopting an ecosystem view,” explaining that Virtuoso has always focused on communities of businesses creating value together, so it should be no surprise that Virtuoso’s Communities program has proven extremely effective in growing skills and production through targeted activities. By focusing on specific travel specialties, Communities help advisors move up the pyramid of success, while growing preferred partner production and engaging travelers through their passion points.

Enhancing client engagement through digital innovation is also a key priority, as Upchurch shared it is designed to succeed in two ways: by enhancing its members’ engagement with their clients and vastly scaling Virtuoso’s ability to deliver new high-value travelers to the network. The launch of a more content rich virtuoso.com has grown traffic and time spent on both the Virtuoso brand site, as well as on member and advisor private label sites. Virtuoso’s dreaming and planning platform, Wanderlist®, has had explosive growth since August, going from just over 3,000 to more than 10,000 Virtuoso advisors now actively using it. To date, Wanderlist has captured a pipeline of future travel worth $150 million and experiences from Virtuoso partners have been added to Wanderlists over 65,000 times.

In addition to the thought-provoking insights that came from the Opening Session, attendees also participated in one-to-one networking sessions as well as roundtable discussions that centered on three areas: consumer engagement, network engagement, and sustainability. It wasn’t all work, though, as Virtuoso also sprinkled in some time for participants to bond over shared experiences, including throwing a traditional Viennese Ball at the famed Spanish Riding School, private use of the historic Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien/Museum of Fine Arts for the opening night welcome reception, as well as “design your day” activities that gave everyone an opportunity to explore the city and surrounding area in a unique and personalized way.

The strong relationship between Virtuoso, the Austrian Tourist Office and the Vienna Tourist Board was a key factor in securing Virtuoso’s Symposium. Throughout the event, the spotlight stayed on the host city and its highly desirable luxury offerings, with additional support coming from the following Virtuoso partners:

  • Hotel Bristol, A Luxury Collection Hotel
  • Hotel Imperial, A Luxury Collection Hotel
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna
  • Park Hyatt Vienna
  • Palais Hansen Kempinski
  • Hotel Sacher Wien
  • Palais Coburg Residenz
  • Mondial Destination Management

An Artist’s Escape

Already known as a hive for local artists and their art which is showcased throughout the property, La Samanna announces its next featured artist and month-long exhibition as part of its artist-in-residence series.  Beginning on December 15, 2021, French photographer François Castelain, who splits his time between Paris and St Martin, will display his intimate portraits of island residents captured through his discerning and soulful lens. Hailing from the world of high-profile fashion photography, Castelain found his passion for portraiture in the beauty and diversity of the island’s people.  Resort guests will be able to book complimentary portraiture photography classes with Castelain and to study his captivating style first-hand.

Aiming to nurture artists and become a fertile arts hub in the French West Indies, the resort launched its artist-in-residency series in July 2021, with an exhibition and workshops by local Street Artist, Jimmy Sabas.   The resort’s interiors, recently reimagined by design firm Muza Lab in London, reflect its commitment to the island’s creative community, with artwork from celebrated local Sir Roland Richardson, known as the “Father of Caribbean Impressionism,” in every single guest room and public space. The La Samanna Spa also displays artwork from the Trimborn sisters, island locals who originate from Düsseldorf, Germany and run Noco Art Villa, which doubles as a studio and gallery. After a studio tour and a visit to NoCo Art Gallery accompanied by Anikó van Nie, an art specialist and the gallery’s director, either Corinna or Norma leads an abstract impressionist painting class, providing all art materials.

What’s New in Wellness

The newest offering from the La Samanna Spa, Energetic Re-Mastery, is designed to holistically support overall wellbeing by taking a multifaceted approach to wellness.  Led by resident energy healer and wellness expert Christine Caruso, who has twenty years of research in Energy Medicine and a loyal following of clients around the globe, each course is tailored to fit individual needs.  Against the backdrop of secluded Baie Longue Beach, she helps clients tap into their unleashed potential through mindfulness and healing techniques. Christmas Day features a lavish complimentary brunch at Corail, followed by the time-honored tradition of Santa arriving by jet ski on the shores of Baie Longue. The resort’s holiday schedule also features an array of complimentary physical activities for those who want to offset all of the merry making.  These include guided power walks, Pilates sessions, Standup Paddle boarding, and snorkeling at Creole Rock.

For those seeking to explore further afield, signature off-property excursions can be booked with the concierge. These include Escape To Tintamarre, an exhilarating pre-dawn boat ride to an uninhabited island to snorkel with a marine conservationist and share an energizing breakfast on the beach before returning to St Martin.  Guests can also hire one of the resort’s charter boats to sail the serene waters between St. Barts or Anguilla, enjoying the best of St Martin’s secluded coves enroute.  Back on land, Hiking With The Arawaksis a moderate to challenging guided excursion up to Paradise Peak in the company of a nature guide. Travelers from various states across the U.S. can fly direct into SXM with airlines like JetBlue, Delta, and United. JetBlue launched new flights from Newark to SXM earlier this year, and Delta plans to resume service from New York to SXM in December.

Entry Rules and Regulations

All travelers to the island must complete a mandatory Electronic Health Authorization System (EHAS) whether arriving by air, boat or in transit. As of November 1, all vaccinated travelers are no longer required to submit a negative Covid-19 test prior to arrival. The vaccination date cannot be older than one year, unless a booster shot has been administered before the one-year term. Children ages 5 and over are required to submit a negative Covid-19 test. Travelers to the island are required to have health insurance coverage for their stay (additional insurance covering Covid-19 related expenses is strongly recommended) and are subject to temperature checks at the Airport Health Checkpoint. Should temperatures be abnormal, the guest would be subject to mandatory testing at their own expense. Detailed guidelines can be found here.

Travelers to the island will not need to quarantine at their accommodations during their stay. However, they will be required to self-monitor their body temperature on a daily basis for 8-14 days (based on where they are traveling from); La Samanna will have a standalone temperature check station onsite. Guests will receive a daily email alert with a link to submit the required information online.

Guests traveling back to the U.S. following the trip can receive their needed antigen or PCR test on-property in the privacy and comfort of their own room – all organized by the La Samanna team.
