Developed by the French entrepreneur, Michel Reybier Hospitality encompasses properties across France and Switzerland, including the La Réserve brand (Paris, Ramatuelle, Zurich, Geneva). The art de vivre philosophy of living one’s best life carries throughout the brand, from historic addresses to Nescens better-aging programs to Michelin-starred yet wholesome cuisine. There’s something for every type of traveler.

For the City Slicker

Not the Zurich You Think You Know: Despite being Switzerland’s banking capital, Zurich is fondly referred to as a ’boutique city’ and for years has been ranked among the world’s top places in terms of its quality of life. A government that is nurturing students and entrepreneurs through its universities and incubators has replaced bureaucratic barriers that hindered innovation. Formerly a hotbed of dissent, it was here that the Protestant Revolution began in the 16th century and the Dada movement was established in 1916. Zurich is once again being recognized as a culture hub as it was in the mid-20th century when Picasso and Chagall roamed its streets. Guests of La Réserve Eden au Lac, which opened in January 2020 following a two-and-a-half year restoration by Philippe Starck, receive city passes granting complimentary access to public transportation and discounts at the city’s world-class museums. The Brutalist Swiss National Museum is completing a multi-phase expansion helmed by Swiss architects Christ & Gantenbein. In October 2021, the veil will be lifted on a David Chipperfield-designed extension to the Kunsthaus art museum, doubling the footprint and making it the second largest collection of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art outside Paris. The expansion is part of a development plan for the city to create an ‘education mile,’ a trail of cultural buildings through the city. The area is already generating buzz with a new art quarter and galleries like Eva Presenhuber and Galerie Brome vying for prime spots near the museum. Switzerland is of course known for its chocolate and sweet-toothed travelers will appreciate the new Lindt Home of Chocolate, an immersive museum that opened in 2020.

Paris is Always a Good Idea: The saying is true, but the City of Light seems to be having an extra special moment right now. The highly anticipated Bourse de Commercethe Tadao Ando-designed museum housing the Pinault collection, will open its doors to the public in the coming months. In other art news, the Musée Jacquemart-André will debut a Botticelli exhibition on September 10, 2021 – just off the heels of the artist’s record-setting auction at Sotheby’s. On the hotel front, Cheval Blanc will be unveiled this spring, the Marine hotel will open its doors to the public in July 2021 for the first time in more than two centuries, and Airelles Chateau de Versailles will welcome guests on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles. La Réserve Paris is designed by interior designer Jacques Garcia who lent his signature touch to the décor, with silk damask walls, velvet drapery and herringbone parquet floors. At 40 rooms (26 of which are suites), it is the smallest and only-French owned of the Palace hotels and feels like a private home – no wonder as the Haussmann-style building was constructed in 1854 and previously the residence of the Duc de Morny (step-brother of Emperor Napoleon III).

Flexibility is the Trend That’s Here to Stay: Say goodbye to those rushed breakfasts and last-minute packing on check-out day. Guests of La Réserve Geneva can now check in as early as 8:00am and check out as late as 8:00pm. The idea came about after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The hotel team was looking to do something proactive and positive during these otherwise challenging times when they have more inventory than usual. The value-add offer allows guests to access a room for 36 hours (vs. the standard 21 hours with a 3pm check-in and 12pm check-out). The floating check-in is at no additional cost and available for every room category; guests just need to give 48-hour notice before arrival. Other hotels getting in on the trend include Peninsula Hotels, Dromoland Castle in Ireland, and La Samanna, a Belmond Hotel, St. Martin.

For the Group Looking to Reunite

Pool? Check. Gardens? Check. Views? Check: Nestled within a Mediterranean jardin overlooking the Cote d’Azur is the cliffside retreat, La Réserve Ramatuelle. The Palace hotel will reopen on May 12, 2021, lifting the veil on a refreshed lobby, two Michelin-starred restaurant, and terrace with panoramic views of the sea. The 28-room/14-villa property was designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte, one of the designers of Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Ideal for these Covid times, the villas seamlessly blend the indoors and outdoors with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors. They range from three- to seven- bedrooms and each come with their own sprawling gardens and pool as well as front-row views of the Mediterranean Sea. Services that can be added on include: private chef, personal trainer, grocery delivery, and boat excursion.

Personal Pied- à-Terre: The La Réserve Paris Apartments overlook the Trocadero in the 16th arrondissement – meaning unbeatable views of the Eiffel Towel. The top floor apartments can be connected to create a nearly 4,000-square-foot pied- à-terre. The building has its own private street entrance and guests buying out the top floor would receive a key for private elevator access. The flats have a large kitchen and the pantry and wine cellar come fully stocked. Large balconies can accommodate intimate dinner parties prepared by a private chef. Furniture can be rearranged to guests’ liking and even a home gym and cinema can be set up.

Privacy is the Name of the Game: Located in the heart of a 200-acre vineyard in Bordeaux, La Chartreuse de Cos d’Estournel is the private residence of Michel Reybier. The Cos d’Estournel vineyard is one of just 14 Chateaux ranked as Second Growth in 1855. The Jacques Garcia-designed house is decorated in a mix of European antiques and Asian tapestries has six bedrooms and two suites; a library; dining room; hammam; indoor and outdoor swimming pools; and a wine cellar, of course.

For the Outdoor Enthusiast

300 Days of Sunshine: In Switzerland’s charming, car-free town of Zermatt, the iconic Schweizerhof hotel reopened in 2019 with a fresh look following an extensive, eight-month top-to-bottom renovation. Designed in an Alpine-chalet style, Schweizerhof is situated on the main thoroughfare of Bahnhofstrasse at the base of the Matterhorn. Oak walls and marble bathrooms in the guest rooms create a cozy, yet contemporary environment while fun touches like wooden hiking sticks, cow bells and comforters emblazoned with the Matterhorn lend a sense of place. While snow sports are available 365 days a year in Zermatt , there is plenty to do beyond skiing and snowboarding. When the temperatures rise, there are abundant trails for hiking and mountain biking. Fun fact: Zermatt is home to the world’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Speaking of heights, paragliding over the alps offers unbeatable views of the Matterhorn. The faint of heart might prefer to fly fish in the alpine lakes which are home to freshwater trout. It helps that Zermatt has over 300 days of sunshine. Since the town is car-free, horse-drawn carriages in town are available to take guests for a ride.

More than Just Wine: The 14-room La Maison d’Estournel in Bordeaux’s Médoc region has no shortage of outdoor activities; there is an ocean, rivers and vineyards nearby, after all. Experiences include fishing on the Gironde River, a private visit the oldest lighthouse in France still in operation, and biking along the Bay of Arachon followed by lunch in an oyster farmer’s hut. Adults can’t have all the fun so kids get in on the action too, with farming classes complete with friendly donkeys, sheep and chickens; street art workshops led by a local painter; and surfing lessons on the coast with a professional.

For the Wellness Junkie

An Urban Retreat: Located 10 minutes outside Switzerland’s second-largest city, La Réserve Geneva feels much farther thanks to its location within a 10-acre park on the shores of Lac Léman. With Europe’s largest alpine lake for its front yard, the property is more like an urban resort. At over 20,000-square-feet, the Nescens Spa is the largest in the city. The Nescens brand was developed by Professor Jacques Proust, a pioneer in anti-aging medicine, at Geneva’s Center for the Prevention of Aging at the Clinique de Genolier. Guests who participate in the signature Better Aging Programs receive a medical evaluation on their first day, meeting with a team of doctors and specialists. With the help of these professionals, guests will understand their own bio-individuality of aging from a genetic, dietary and psychological standpoint before receiving a personalized 4- or 7-day itinerary. The program is tailored to individual goals, incorporating three daily meals, personal training sessions and spa treatments.

Wellness, but Make It French: Like at the Geneva Spa, the multi-day Nescens programs at La Réserve Ramatuelle are bespoke and holistic, but this is a pick for the nature lover. There’s an emphasis on outdoor fitness here – and given the breathtaking setting overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, no one will wonder why. Think guided hikes along the coastline, swimming, and aqua cycling classes in the open-air pool. In addition to offering signature Nescens programs the spa also has Crème de la Mer treatments. The hotel’s restaurant, La Voile, was recently awarded two Michelin stars. Dishes adhere to the Mediterranean diet and highlight local, seasonal seafood and fresh produce and herbs alongside healthy fats like avocado and olive oil. Chef Eric Canino doesn’t on sacrifice flavor, though – this is France, after all.

NANTUCKET REOPENS THIS SPRING

March 4th, 2021

The ultimate east coast chic escape reopens for the 2021 season this spring. Just 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Nantucket is an idyllic island escape with miles of sandy beaches, centuries-old mansions, quaint shops and a classic small-town charm. Shake off the winter coats and reunite with loved ones in a destination where families have vacationed for generations. From private yacht charters to outdoor excursions and new suites, this is everything you need to know to book your next getaway.

An Island Escape: Hold the Passport

Leave the passport at home for an island escape with White Elephant’s one-, two- and three-bedroom Residences. Much like personal beach homes, the residences feature private entrances, pantry-style kitchens and in-room laundry that invite guests to linger longer. When booking a five- or seven-night stay at the Residences, families will also enjoy a complimentary four-hour Barton & Gray Hinckley yachting excursion through the brand’s exclusive partnership as well as a $150 or $250 resort credit, respectively. Located just steps from town and one of the only hotels on Nantucket with a pool, White Elephant allows for easy access to the island’s restaurants, shopping and water activities. White Elephant will reopen for the season on April 15, 2021 with nightly starting rates ranging from $715 to $1,815 for the residences.

Beyond the Beaches

From the walking trails of Sanford Farm and Masquetuck Reservation to the grassy lands of Tom Nevers and the Pitch Pine Barrens, more than 50 percent of Nantucket is under permanent conservation and much of the protected land is available for exploration. The Wauwinet, which borders the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, offers walking tours through the nature reserves’ salt marshes, along the miles of beaches, and to Great Point Lighthouse located on the extreme northeastern tip of Nantucket. For those looking to get out on two wheels, couples at the adults-only resort can set off to explore the island with the Ride and Rosé package – a two-night stay with access to complimentary Priority Bicycles, a custom bike map around the island and a rosé champagne picnic courtesy of the award-winning TOPPER’S restaurant. The Wauwinet will reopen April 17, 2021 with nightly rates starting at $205.

Girls Still Run the World

While 2021 is making history with the first female Vice President of the United States. Nantucket was home to more history-making women than anywhere else in the country throughout the 1800s. Whaling, the island’s isolated location and Quakerism all played a role in championing women’s rights. As a nod to the island’s history-making females, each of the four new suites at the Jared Coffin House, a former whaling merchant’s home, is named after an influential woman from Nantucket. Anna Gardner was instrumental in calling an anti-slavery meeting in 1841 during which Frederick Douglass gave his first speech as an abolitionist speaker. Lucretia Coffin Mott participated in the country’s first meeting about women’s rights in 1848. Maria Mitchell was the first professional female astronomer who opened her own school in 1835 that was desegregated, a controversial move at the time, and Mary Coffin Starbuck is recognized for bringing Quakerism to Nantucket in the early 1700s. Jared Coffin House will reopen for the season on April 4, 2021 with nightly rates for the suites starting at $715.

A Family Reunion

The whole family (four-legged members too!) are welcome at the one- and two-bedroom Woof Cottages located at the Nantucket Boat Basin. The closest thing to staying on the water without being on a boat, the Cottages feature all the same amenities at the regular cottages with extras for the furry friends including beds, a welcome basket of treats and toys, food and water bowls and personalized pet tags. Guests can also turn to local insider and pet concierge Bailey on the best pet-friendly activities on island. The resident black lab / Britney spaniel mix can share tips on the best places to run free, play fetch and settle down for lunch. He can be reached at: petconcierge@thecottagesnantucket.com. The Cottages will reopen for 2021 season on April 8, 2021 with nightly rates starting at $175.

How to Travel to and Around the Island

JetBlue, United and American Airlines are re-launching direct service to the island beginning in May from east coast cities including Boston, New York, Newark, Washington D.C. and Charlotte. New this season, American Airlines will also add a direct route between Chicago and Nantucket. Roundtrip flights from New York start at $250 while nonstop service from Washington D.C. dips as low as $180 roundtrip. Seastreak Ferry’s seasonal service between Manhattan and Nantucket will also return on weekends beginning June 26.

Once on island, guests of White Elephant Resorts will enjoy complimentary access to BMW vehicles thanks to the brand’s partnership. Guests can be chauffeured in a 7 series or borrow the keys to take a spin on their own.

Wellness Travel

March 4th, 2021

After a year of feeling powerless when it comes to our physical health and wellbeing, many of us have begun to look inward to what we can control. While experts warn of a ‘mental health pandemic’ on the rise, solutions have become more innovative than ever. From mindfulness apps like Calm and Headspace to fermentation classes to at-home fitness apps to virtual breathwork practices, the term ‘wellness’ has evolved tremendously in the past year – and for many, has become a daily priority. According to the Global Wellness Summit’s 2021 Wellness Trend Report, immune health will remain a hot topic in 2021. Instead of the fast fixes of immunity-boosting supplements, the report shares that immune-balancing is best done with an all-encompassing approach through the core pillars of wellness: exercise, diet and sleep. Global luxury travel network Virtuoso is similarly seeing strong interest in wellness as travelers begin booking trips for 2021 and beyond.

It’s no secret that travel is good for the soul. Exploring new places and experiencing new cultures alone can provide a strong mental health boost – which in turn offers physical benefits. The following travel companies have taken a deeper approach to providing their guests with that sense of wellbeing that many of us are craving. Read on for travel experiences that embrace wellbeing through naturemeditationnourishmentskincare and sleep.

Wellbeing through NATURE

HAMPTONS: Shou Sugi Ban House, the Hampton’s first destination spa and wellness retreat, is hosting a Nature Immersion retreat April 2-4 that will include forest bathing as well as a nighttime experience where guests can immerse themselves in the natural rhythm of the moonlight. Also on offer is a new Digital Detox that invites guests to redirect attention away from their devices and back to the present moment. Itineraries will feature intention setting, self-guided meditation, journal prompts, nature walks, and morning and nighttime routines which will help participants integrate healthy and mindful practices into their day. Looking ahead, this summer, the six-day Ocean Immersion will include daily surf lessons as well as beach meditation.

BAJA: Paradero Todos Santos opened on February 1, 2021. Todos Santos is a year-round haven for surfers and outdoor enthusiasts – a setting where the desert, mountains, ocean and farmland collide. Surfing at Cerritos or San Pedrito beach, guided hiking and mountain biking along the bluffs of the Pacific coast, beach set up at unspoiled locations, and hands-on farming tutorials are all included in the nightly rate. Embracing the wild terrain, Paradero is an 80 percent landscape, 20 percent development project. The 100,000-square-foot botanical garden is the focus of the property (there are 80 endemic species – from red sand verbena and Mojave yucca to Shaw’s agave). More than 30 percent of the flora was grown from seed in the on-site greenhouse, while the remainder was purchased from local greenhouses.

NAPA VALLEY: Napa Valley may seem like wall-to-wall vineyards, but only nine percent of the Valley is covered in vines. The region is flanked by two mountain ranges, Mayacama and Vaca Mountains, laced with hiking, biking and running trails (with more than 53,000 acres preserved by the Napa Valley Land Trust). The region is also rooted in wellness history. Since the 1800s, visitors have sought rejuvenation in the mineral-rich waters of Calistoga’s volcanic hot springs and natural volcanic ash. Napa Valley’s first Four Seasons Resort & Residences will open in Calistoga later this year; the spa will feature steam pods in which hammocks will be suspended above geo-thermal pools for guests to absorb the heated vapor. Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs, originally built in 1952 and considered one of the first resorts in Calistoga, will unveil a large-scale renovation this month with new outdoor cabana treatment rooms.

JAMAICA: A visit to Jamaica’s Blue Mountains, located 3,100-feet above sea level, will offer an unexpected island experience. There’s no beach or blazing sun, instead visitors can expect hiking trails, music history and meticulously roasted coffee beans. Strawberry Hill, which appears to be floating among the clouds in the heart of the mountains, is owned by Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Chris Blackwell. The property offers curated wellness treks, including a hike to an altitude of 4,000-feet before reaching the family-run Old Tavern Coffee Estate for a brew tasting; or a walk on Settlement Trail, where travelers will encounter Jurassic Park-like greenery with more than 550 species of trees and flowers.

Wellbeing through NOURISHMENT

CAPE TOWN: Understanding where our food comes from and what we put in our bodies is the root of health and wellness for many. In Cape Town, Chef Rudi Liebenberg at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town is known for his rotating five-course Wasted! tasting that features re-imagined scraps and byproducts of fruits, vegetables and meats. Hosted at the Chef’s Table, guests will be able to watch as ginger trimmings and buchu become cordials while trout trimmings are transformed into tartare and tempura.

HAMPTONS: Shou Sugi Ban House will host a culinary retreat on April 23-25 led by Noma co-founder Mads Refslund. Mads oversees the culinary program at the property, where the philosophy is born from the belief that true health is grounded in nature and food is medicine. The weekend begins with a session on Spring Cleaning for the Liver led by the House’s resident nutritionist followed by a four-course dinner by Mads before guests return to their private guest studios for a seasonal soak. Other highlights from the itinerary include an Afternoon Tea Tasting, Shamanic Release, Herb Garden Mocktails, and a workshop on “nose-to-tail eating” where guests will learn about why the concept is not just food for the planet but also good the body.

Wellbeing through MEDITATION

NAMIBIA: andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge reopened in the Namib Desert in October 2019 after a top-to-bottom rebuild. Travelers can truly to connect to their soul in the utter silence of this desert; andBeyond has trails set up for guests to take non-guided strolls and meditative walks – completely alone – through the towering sand dunes (some up to 1,000 feet tall). The incredible surrounds – so silent you can hear your own heart beating – lend itself to another level of “wellness”. Wifi at the property is purposely spotty to encourage guests to devote their attention to the desert.

NAPA VALLEY: Solage Calistoga is a contemporary oasis with a spa that offers a floating guided meditation treatment in which a guest sits in a mesh hammock, partially submerged in the open-air geothermal mineral pool (96 to 98 degrees). Guests can book the specific ‘Starlight at the Bathhouse’ treatment for a private after-hours experience available between 8:30-10:30pm. Guests will experience the floating meditation while gazing at the stars and moon, before heading off to bed more centered and relaxed.

HAMPTONS: Shou Sugi Ban House’s Intuitive Movement and Resident Healing Arts Practitioner Christiana Schelfhout leads breathwork classes at the wellness retreat. As a holistic health guide, she allows people to claim radical responsibility for their own evolution and reminds them of their innate ability to heal themselves. Christiana’s dedicated breathwork sessions use specific postures to aid digestion, regulate hormones and restore the nervous system. Pranayama breathing balances the subtle energies and revitalizes the lungs. Classes are designed to release negative emotions, stagnant energy and physical blocks that are often inaccessible to our logical minds.

COSTA RICA: The newly opened Nayara Tented Camp, set deep in the rainforest on the edge of the Arenal Volcano, offers travelers an escape from reality into nature. Guests can find wellness of the mind and body with evening meditation classes by candlelight in the yoga pavilion cantilevered over the rainforest. The soundtrack (chirping tree frogs and a babbling stream below) sets the audio scene for low-impact poses designed to relax the body in preparation for sleep.

Wellbeing through SKINCARE

EVERYWHERE: Tried-and-trusted French skincare brand, Guinot, has launched a new Lift Summum Serum for a firmer and smoother facial complexion. This light but powerful product is an easy step to add to any skincare routine, bringing energy and youth to the skin. With age, skin loses its tone, softness and supple appearance. Key ingredients like Alaria Esculenta Seaweed Extract and Hyaluronic Acid create a more defined, luminous and resilient complexion.
