UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa

South America • Trancoso, Brazil

A boutique hotel with a bohemian soul and a serious focus on sustainability and community impact, UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa put the remote Brazilian fishing village of Trancoso on the map when it opened in 2009. The passion project of Wilbert Das (the former Creative Director of Diesel) has inspired many copycats but none come even close to this extraordinary eco-retreat’s sense of style.

The newest addition is Casa Azul, a century-old farmhouse originally located in a small town 460 miles from Trancoso. The antique casa was carefully dismantled with precise tagging, numbering, and photography, then transported and remounted in the middle of UXUA Maré (a nature sanctuary located on Itapororoca beach).

By the Numbers

Opened in 2009; 13 restored traditional houses (casas), ranging from one- to three bedrooms; 9 private villas in the rental pool; 40,000 green aventurine quartz lining the pool; 5 miles – the design ethos that dictates nothing be sourced beyond this radius; 1 100-year-old casa deconstructed, moved 460 miles, and rebuilt
