The Potlatch Club

Caribbean • Governor’s Island, Eleuthera (Bahamas)

Eleuthera’s first real luxury boutique hotel opened its doors to much buzz in 2024 — not least of all because it re-envisioned one of the region’s most iconic private estates. In 2016, new owners Bruce Loshusan and Hans Febles stumbled across the dilapidated property that once drew the likes of Greta Garbo and rock royalty (Paul and Linda McCartney honeymooned here), and with dedication, vision and creativity, set to bring The Potlatch Club back as a glorious island escape.

An extensive seven-year renovation, overseen by Febles in partnership with Nassau-based interior designer Amanda Lindroth, returned the mid-century icon to its former glory. Accommodations are housed in a mix of historic and newly built whitewashed suites, cottages, and ocean-facing villas; all come with a private veranda or terrace because outdoor splendor is the whole point here. Much like the island of Eleuthera itself, The Potlatch Club is about privacy and simple elegance, offering guests (yes, even very famous ones) a space to unwind and recharge.

By the Numbers

Opened in 2024; 12 acres of gardens; 11 “keys” including garden- and ocean-facing cottages; 2 villas (a one-bedroom and a 4-bedroom ocean-view villa) come with butler service; a 7-mile deserted stretch of pink-sand beach directly fronts the resort; 3 curated special itineraries, including a visit to nearby Harbour Island; 135 gorgeous beaches on the island; 1 airline offering direct flights between West Palm Beach and Eleuthera (Tradewinds Aviation)

Some of our stories

The property’s original clubhouse retains historic details, such as checkered floors, which were crafted in Nassau in 1919, and classic whitewashed arches that hark to the property’s storied past
The lengthy restoration was a true passion project for Febles and Loshusan who showed great patience, vision and courage, judging from the dilapidated state of the resort when they purchase it
Breezy Fig Tree restaurant, which overlooks the pool, is named after the beautiful tree by the entrance, and features a light menu full of seasonal farm-and-sea-to- table organic cuisine (take a walk around: the pictures show the former resort)
General Manager Kezang Dorji, originally from Bhutan (previous posts include Parrot Cay by Como on the Turks & Caicos) heads an outstanding team whose personal touches can be felt in all details of the resort
Three custom-curated itineraries, including “On the Water” with a boat charter and water-sports galore (swimming with turtles, snorkeling etc.), as well as a day trip to nearby Harbor Island for top shops, bars and restaurants
Eleuthera’s name is derived from the Greek word for “freedom”. There are no major resorts, high-end shopping, or even a single traffic light on the island, which is all about quiet luxury and unspoiled, rugged Bahamian beauty (think: limestone caves, blue holes, pineapple farms, a Nature Preserve and incredible coastal trails)
