Gili Lankanfushi Maldives

Asia • Maldives

Located in the Maldives’ North Malé Atoll, Gili Lankanfushi features 45 sustainable overwater villas that hover above turquoise waters and fan out from a palm-studded private island. Gili is beloved for its Robinson Crusoe vibe; feeling deserted in paradise is the overarching yet loose theme. The moment guests board the 20-minute speed boat ride from the dock at the airport, they’re handed a canvas bag for their shoes. Guests won’t need them again until they depart. The resort’s ethos: ‘No news, no shoes’ is taken literally.  The resort is even has its own time zone- an hour ahead of Male to make the most of sunshine-filled days.

By the Numbers

Opened in 2000; 45 villas including the world’s largest overwater villa; 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé (no need for a seaplane!); more than 300 pieces of coral transplanted onto Gili’s house reef; 10,000 wine bottles representing 500 labels in the underground cellar
