CREST (Center for Responsible Travel)

The Center for Responsible Travel (CREST), based in Washington, DC, is dedicated to increasing the positive global impact of tourism. Its unbiased, academically rigorous, practical research set CREST apart as an important part of the world’s largest service sector: travel. Tourism generates over $1.6 trillion in export earnings a year; ranks third worldwide in exports and is the top export category in many countries; and is the world’s largest employer, accounting for one in ten jobs globally. In 2012, for the first time in history, international tourist arrivals topped 1 billion, and that figure is expected to reach 1.8 billion by 2030.

With this travel boom comes concerns such as overtousism and it is CREST’s mission to promote ways to travel responsibly. Travel done right can be a force for preserving environments, cultures, and destinations.
